Chris Cook, former Olympic Swimmer and Commonwealth Games Breastroke champion, visited Gateshead and Whickham ASC to motivate our young swimmers to reach for the skies and be “their personal best”. The session consisted of a talk designed to inspire the next generation of North East Swimmers as well as a hands on coaching session to pass on some of his extensive experiences and advice.
This event coincided well with the swimming club welcoming Ken Nesworthy as their new head coach. Ken, Chris Cook’s former coach, has recently joined the club and was delighted to welcome Chris to the a Club that Ken says “has huge potential” and “is going places”.
Over 70 talented young swimmers, aged 8-16 took part in the Masterclass that stretched their bodies and minds to new heights and all left the swimming centre at Dunston feeling ready to take on the world. Chris also managed to provide advice and information to parents who appreciated the insight with one parent stating that “The masterclass was a first class session which has left me and my son with plenty of food for thought. It helps that Chris was such a positive role model who really relates well to the young swimmers whilst retaining their attention and respect”.
The Chris Cook Masterclass came at a time when Gateshead and Whickham already boasts a number of County Champions in various different strokes who are all looking to build on their successes in Regional, National and International events. The future is indeed very bright for the G & W swimmers who dream of achieving the dizzy heights of Chris’ career and cannot wait to put his advice into practice!
