Another fabulous performance by our Diddy Leaguers – WELL DONE

Well done Team GAW!!  Another qualification to the National Junior League Final following a fantastic performance at the Northern Area final at the Meres Leisure Centre in Grantham.  Finishing second to Leeds is no mean feat and every one of our swimmers, coaches, poolside assistants and supporters were amazing!

An early start and nearly four hours on the bus was well worth the final result, with Gateshead and Whickham once again proving they were the best junior team in the North East and were absolutely at home against some much bigger clubs.

The final scores were:

City Of Leeds – 331

GAW – 310

Stockport Metro – 295

Northampton – 252

Southport – 252

Lough – 178

Now, we’re off to the National Final, on the 27th November at Corby International Pool.  A few more weeks’ training for our superb athletes and a little time for those of us that are slightly older to recuperate and prepare for another magnificently exciting day.

To all of our swimmers, the Borough of Gateshead can be rightly proud of you, the Club is proud of you and you should be hugely proud of yourselves.  Don’t forget, this message applies equally to those of you that didn’t make the team this time.  This wouldn’t happen without you either.  You’re all part of the GAW team.

Well done and thank you.

Aspire Channel Swim 2016 – good luck guys

aspire

A couple of our Club members and supporters (Graeme Bradley and Sue Thorpe) are participating in this year’s Aspire Channel Swim.  They will be swimming the distance of the English Channel over 12 weeks ( 12th Sept to 5th Dec), raising money for Aspire and people paralysed by Spinal Cord Injury.

This is a really worthwhile cause and the whole of GAW ASC wish both Graeme and Sue good luck with this challenge.  Please offer your support and encouragement if you see them.

Find out more about the challenge see the below link:-

http://www.aspirechannelswim.co.uk/

Graeme and Sue have provided the following :-
“I started my channel swim challenge last week and decided to make it more challenging by completing it kicking only. I’ve had a good start and it looks like I might complete the challenge in four weeks.
The decision to kick only is that I’m trying to improve my front crawl and my kick is terrible. Hopefully this will improve my stroke and help people with spinal injuries in the process.
There should be a link to my just giving account through my attached profile – http://aspirechannelswim.co.uk/user/u/6332  .  Thanks Graeme”
“My name is Sue Thorpe and I have signed up for the challenge of swimming the equivalent number of lengths to cover 22miles. I started my competitive swimming at the age of 9, as a member of Whickham ASC and Gateshead Metro SC. So as a very ex swimmer, I wanted to get fit again, hence the challenge.

As I’m away during the challenge period, I have to do 157 lengths per week!  I have family and friends sponsors and I know I can achieve the goal….see you in the pool !!!!! 😉”

GAW Inaugural Golf Open 2016

Thank you to everyone that supported the Gateshead and Whickham ASC inaugural golf open today at Ravensworth Golf Club.  It was a fantastic event and all 17 players had a great time with some great shots on show from almost everyone and some less so from me.

Special thanks to the following:

  • Paul Armstrong and Ross Bradley for arranging the event – brilliant idea, well organised and something I would love you to build upon for the club.
  • Marion Bradley, Cathy Strickland and Jill Barrett for organising the buffet at their own expense.
  • All the swimmers for turning up and supporting the golfers; Zoe Price, Faye and Hannah Brown, David Dodds, Molly Finley, Daniel and Adam Barrett, James and Adam Strickland and Chloe Pritchard.
  • Well done to Adam Strickland too for being the only swimmer to last past the first hole as a caddy.
  • Thanks to Jill Barrett and Liann Brown for the mobile refreshment service.  Once we found Liann, it didn’t take us long to lift the buggy out of the ditch!

Match report from Paul to follow…………

The day raised a fantastic £226.  Well done!

Kind regards,

Andy

Friends of GAW – do you know anyone who’d be interested??

Hi everyone,

Friends of Gateshead and Whickham is a new initiative to try and develop a new income stream for the Club.  As you are aware, finances are never far away from the top of the agenda and this has every chance of helping us remain stable and operating at the increasingly high competitive level that we do.

I know as well as anyone that swimming can feel like a constant pressure in your pockets, but a very small amount each month from yourselves, friends, family or anyone else you know could make a real difference!

All of the instructions needed are in the letter and standing order form below.

Friends of Gateshead and Whickham ASC-Friends and Family V1.0

It would be fantastic if you could all support this, either personally or by convincing those you know outside of the Club to help out.

Thanks to all of you for looking at this and for your continued support!!

Kind regards,

Andy S
