REPORT Scottish Open Short Course Nationals Report 2017

Report by Coach Nesworthy

(Photos to follow)

Six swimmers from my Youth Senior Performance Group qualified for this year’s top-class 3-day Scottish short course championships.

  • Sarah March
  • Sarah “Tigger” Wright
  • Zoe “Zippy” Price
  • Adam Morkot
  • Sam Pashley
  • James “Hamez” Strickland

The event was held at the Royal Commonwealth Pool Edinburgh from the 8th to the 10th December and there were some great performances.

Sarah March and Zoe Price

Leading up to this event, both girls had put in some long, Intense, hard and specific breaststroke sets in both the training tank and the gym. This paid off and it resulted in them producing quality performances throughout all of the 6 races in which they competed.

Sarah and Zoe are developing into Breaststroke specialists producing 100% LTB’s and ALL TIME CLUB RECORDS in the 50,100,200m Breaststroke events.

  • 100m Sarah 1.17.46 / Zoe 1.17.09 (All -Time club record)
  • 200m Sarah 2.44.82(All Time Club Record) Zoe 2.52.29
  • 50m event both athletes sub 35.00 seconds for the first time. Recently crowned Swim England North East Junior 50m Champion Zoe 34.76 and Sarah with another all-time club record of 34.48

Sarah Wright

Sarah had the busiest race program of all of the GAW swimmers, sompeting in nine events.  She produced consistent performances throughout the 3-day competition working on specific race strategies.

She had LTB swims in both the 50 Free with 27.97 and 50 Back with 30.79. These were all-time club records!

Sarah’s other excellent LTB performance of the competition came in the 200 Free with 2.10.72. Holly Whites 13-year-old record of 2.07.62 is on the horizon as Sarah’s next performance target.

Adam Morkot

Despite being on a modified training program, Adam qualified for his most ever five Scottish Nationals events.

Adam produced a LTB performance in the 100m IM with 1.05.61 and was close to all his PBs in the 50m, 100m and 200m Butterfly events. The 200 being his closest with a time of 2.15.24 just 0.83 secs of his LTB

Sam Pashley

A consistently hard work ethic in training sessions and some great competition performances enabled Sam Pashley to achieve his goal of qualifying at these championships for the first time.

As the youngest member of the group, Sam the lined up in heat 1 of the 400 Freestyle and despite misjudging his opening 100m pace, he still produced a solid performance of 4.26.00. Just 2 seconds away from his LTB. A good experience for the next time!!

REPORT Hearts Premier and National County Team Championships 7th & 8th October 2017

Hosts’ hearts won, and rivals’ hearts broken!

The first weekend in October witnessed swimmers from Team GAW stretched across two nations. A team of 24 swimmers from different squads took on some of the best age group swimmers Scotland has to offer, while Team GAW’s rising national star Ryan Zhao, in the County Team Champs, pitted his wits against the best swimmers in the UK.

At the Hearts Premier Age Group Open, just outside Edinburgh, a team of GAW swimmers represented the club admirably, demonstrating great skills and competitiveness. In what was a lot of swimmer’s first experience of a stay-away (parent free) gala, the team put in some fantastic individual performances. It was, however, the collective performance that was most impressive. In what were difficult conditions, swimmers competing in multiple events with no swim-down facilities, the team performed fantastically well, posting a collective 125 personal best times and collecting almost as many medals! Behaviour throughout the trip was exemplary and both swimmers attitude and skills were positively commented on by officials and rival coaches alike.

Everyone performed to their best but a few individual performances were noteworthy. Birthday weekend twins Laura and Jessica Cottee smashed meet records in the 12yrs 100m/200m breaststroke events, taking a gold and silver in the 100m brs. Jessica’s 200m brs time of 2:51.80 placed her in the top 15 in Britain. 12yr old Adam Barrett set an incredible 10 meet records from 10 swims and his 200m bk time of 2:20.06 placed him in the top 5 in the British 13yrs rankings. Individual honours included Angelo Contini, Adam Barrett, and Adam Strickland picking up ‘Top Boy’ trophies for the 11, 12, and 13yr age groups respectively. Not to be outdone, team GAW’s girls picked up two ‘Top Girl’ awards in the shape of Ellie Houghton (12yrs) and Hannah Brown (13yrs).
And to the coveted ‘Top Club’ award….Team GAW romped to victory, adding yet another trophy to our bulging (though entirely metaphorical) cabinet.

Well done to all involved, you did us proud!

County Star, Ryan Zhao

Some 250 miles away from his team mates in Edinburgh, team GAW’s Ryan Zhao was representing N&D in the ‘National County Teams Championships’. The competition involved 40 counties from across the UK in two divisions and pitted each county’s top 12-13yr, 14-15yr, and 16-17yrs swimmers against each other. N&D competed in Division 1.

Ryan was selected as N&D’s representative in two individual events (the maximum allowed) and excelled himself in both. In Ryan’s first race, the 100m breaststroke, he exceeded all expectations, taking top spot in an unbelievable 1:09.06, as he took home the maximum 20 points for his team. Ryan repeated the feat in his more favoured event, the 100m backstroke, in which, going in fastest, he blitzed the field and recorded a time of 1:01.45. Both times saw Ryan scale the national rankings at this early point in the season. He also competed in the 4×50m medley event, leading his team out to an impressive 2nd place overall.

The county finished in 5th place overall, jumping a massive 11 places from last year’s position.  Massive congratulations to Ryan and the N&D team as a whole.

Summer Nationals Report 2017

A report by coaches Ken Nesworthy and Paul Armstrong

These 2017 Nationals were really exciting for our swimmers. It was the first time at a major National Event for all of GAW’s competing athletes and this championships ran live streaming of the World Championships in Hungary at the same time.

With 6 athletes qualifying this year, TEAM GAW doubled the number of athletes achieving the standard required to compete at British and or Swim England Summer Nationals. Here’s a report on how well each of our swimmers did at these events.

ADAM MORKOT
15 years old YOUTH/SENIOR PERFORMANCE Athlete Adam was once told by his previous club that he was un–coachable. Adam proved them wrong and has moved gradually through the GAW ranks, only recently qualifying for Regional Champs. He continued his progression by qualifying for the Scottish Short course championships with ease, producing an impressive performance in the 200 Butterfly only to see the time wiped out on a technical error.

Following solid attendance and applying a hard work ethic in the training tank during the winter months, Adam entered into the New Year in great shape and produced several best times during the qualifying window reducing his time within a year from a 2.33.10 to 2.16.29 for the 200 Fly.

In the run up to the Nationals, long standing pre-arranged family and educational commitments meant that it was going to be a tough call for Adam to replicate his “Window” performances. In the heats, a performance time of 2.20.65 Adam achieved his first goal of qualifying for a second swim at the Nationals by making it to the final in 10th place with split times (50m 30. 60) (100m 1.05.13) (150m 1.43 01).

Immediately after his heat swim, Adam’s lactate test registered OBLA 13.4 mmol/L, meaning that Adam had almost hit his peak lactate level.

In his final, Adam took on the opposing athletes. With nothing to lose, he followed his plan to go out faster and use all his character to produce an improved performance.  With split times (50m 29.74) (100m 1.03.89 (15 m 1.39.95) Adam proved he had the strength of character to squeeze out a time of 2.19.58  and an improved National Final 9th place finish in his first ever Nationals. He also improved his lactate PB to OBLA 13.9 mmol/L!!

SARAH WRIGHT
15 years old YOUTH/SENIOR PERFORMANCE Athlete Sarah continued to make progress throughout the season, breaking no less than 9 OPEN, club records, winning an NER OPEN 50 m Butterfly silver medal and qualifying for both British 50m Butterfly and English National 100m/200m Butterfly events.

At the British champs, Sarah finished in the country’s top 20 with a 19th place in the 50 Butterfly. Her time of 29.88 seconds was just 0.63 off a final place and 0.87 off her LTB of 29.01.

Moving on to the Swim England championships for the 100 Butterfly, Sarah gave it her all to swim a 1.07.92. Just 1.22 seconds off the final and 1.89 off her LTB.

ZOE PRICE
Although 15 years old YOUTH/SENIOR PERFORMANCE Athlete Zoe (“ZIPPY”) gained medals at county championships and finals at regionals, her early season form outside the national qualifying window evaded her for several months as she pressed time and time again to a gain place in the summer nationals.

Breaking all OPEN 50/100 m Breaststroke long and short course club records on the way, Zoe made every practice session for an unbelievable 10 months, a fantastic achievement at any level. This persistence paid off in the 50 Breaststroke with her qualifying for the Swim England Summer Nationals with sub 36.00 swims at both Edinburgh and Sunderland.

In her Swim England Nationals heat, Zoe produced her best swim for 4 months, posting a time of 36.01 finishing 13th in the country, just 0.50 seconds off a final place.

RYAN ZHAO
Over two weeks this summer, AGE GROUP PERFORMANCE  Athlete 13 Years old Ryan Zhao set up camp at Ponds Forge International Aquatics Centre to compete with the nation’s most talented swimmers at both the British, and English National Swimming Championships.

Though swimming in the 13/14yrs joint age group category, Ryan managed to qualify for 5 events.  His highest ranking going in to the events meant qualification at British Nationals in the 50m backstroke.  He added 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle, along with the 50m and 100m breaststroke to his event list the following week at English Nationals.

Ryan’s 50m backstroke kicked off his Nationals fortnight. Fresh from a warm weather Turkish training camp, Ryan went into the competition as the fastest 13yr old in Britain with a time of 29.97s.  He performed fantastically well in his heat, dropping his time to 29.95s, an excellent performance that would have won him the silver medal in his own (13yrs) age group.

The following week Ryan began English Nationals on the Wednesday with a terrific personal best time in the 100m breaststroke heat of 1:13.38, making it through to the evening’s final, his first ever.  More would soon follow!  The final saw Ryan, on his coach’s instructions, take out the first 50m much harder, almost posting a 50m PB.  Although he faded in the second 50m he had shown his desire not only to take part in finals, but also to compete with the best athletes in the age group above, for the podium places.

Next up, on Friday, for Ryan was the 100m freestyle.  In perhaps his most impressive heat swim of the fortnight, and despite being tired (and grumpy) from travelling down on the morning, Ryan raised himself and produced an heroic performance in the very first heat of the day, scorching to a new personal best time of 57.63s, and earning another final appearance.  His heat time moved him up to 2nd position in the British rankings.  The final itself mirrored his previous final as Ryan pushed himself to the limit over the first 50m, putting himself firmly in the race.  Although Ryan finished in 10th position, he was the fastest 13 year old and a pleasing trend was emerging of Ryan. Rather than playing it safe, really pushing himself to extremes, a trait that would serve him well in finals to come.

Saturday was to be both Ryan’s last day at Nationals, and his busiest.  First up, Ryan competed in the 50m breaststroke where he performed well, narrowly missing out on a personal best time.  In his 100m backstroke heat Ryan posted a fantastic personal best time of 1:04.60s, knocking almost a second off his previous best and easily earning him a place in the evening’s final.  This was to prove merely an hors d’oeuvre to his final bow.  Ryan produced a stunning start and underwater phase, utilising the full 15m allowed and bursting into the lead, he maintained his form through the first 50m though the chasing pack had reeled him in by the turn.  Ryan turned just about in 1st position in a time of 30.20s (just 0.25s off his 50m PB), and then produced another devastating underwater phase of around 12.5m to destroy most of the field.  He maintained his stroke rate, and a much-improved leg kick, right through to the finish and was just touched out into silver medal position by the fast finishing Matthew Broughton of City of Lincoln.  Ryan produced a stunning personal best, lowering his heat swim by almost two seconds, and touching in a time of 1:02.84s, putting him 4th in the all-time British rankings for the 13yr age group.  A truly outstanding performance.

Over the two weeks, Ryan produced a magnificent 5 personal best performances, 3 finals and a fantastic English Nationals silver medal.

ELLA WATSON / WILL HARDY
Congratulations to Will and Ella on your qualification and despite all efforts to be fit and ready for Nationals both were not able to compete due to injury. Next season will be your time

As seen at the World Championships, athletes at all levels suffer from nerves while others embrace the occasion and excel. Either way, the experienced gained will enhance your self-confidence to achieve even better results next time

Congratulations swimmers from everyone

We are all proud of your great achievements and you all represented TEAM GAW with great distinction.

REPORT NER Age Group Championships – Weekend 2

After a tremendously successful first weekend of competition for GAW, the team descended again on the Aquatic Centre in Sunderland for weekend 2 of the Long Course NER Championships.  Adding to the 15 final appearances in weekend 1, the age group squad achieved a further 19 final appearances.  New to the finalist list were Paddy Speight (50m butterfly), Ella Watson (100m butterfly), and Ellie Houghton (50m/100m butterfly).

In total Team GAW achieved a haul of 9 medals to add to the 7 won the previous weekend.  The team plundered 4 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze medals giving the squad a total of 16 medals over the two weekends, and 8 NER titles.

13yr old Ryan Zhao again led the way finishing with 3 gold medals to add to the 4 he had won the previous week.  Ryan added the 100m freestyle, 200m and 50m backstroke titles to his haul.  His 50m backstroke time of 29.97s placed him at the top of the British Swimming rankings for 13yr olds. Ryan also collected bronze medals in the 400m freestyle and 200m breaststroke. He was once again joined on the podium by team mate Adam Barrett who picked up a silver in the 400m freestyle, a bronze in the 50m backstroke and a stunning gold medal in the 200m IM giving Adam his first NER title.  Adding to the boys achievement was Ellie Houghton, who smashed PBs in the sprint butterfly events, picking up a valiant 4th place finish in the 100m before collecting a thrilling silver medal in the 12yrs girls 50m butterfly in a time of 31.0s.

As per the 1st weekend the team put in a great deal of effort and performed admirably, again smashing all club records for both final appearances and actual medal haul.

Massive congratulations to all involved.

REPORT NER Youth/Age Group Championships – W/E 1 20th/21st May

The North East Region’s most talented 11-14 yr olds were brought together at Sunderland Aquatic Centre this past weekend for part 1 of the annual Long Course NER Championships.

Team GAW are extremely well represented at the championships this year with no fewer then 20 swimmers competing over the two weekends. The 1st weekend witnessed a tremendous level of performance by GAW swimmers who achieved a near to 100% PB success rate. Everyone gave their all and represented the club with great distinction.

In total, the team achieved 15 finalists. Included in that number were 13yr olds Adam Strickland (200m freestyle/100m backstroke) and Hannah Brown (400m IM/200m fly), 12yr olds Evan Sordy (200m fly) and Jessica Cottee (100m breaststroke.) In the boys 1500m there was also a notable top 10 performance (HDW) by 12yr old Fintan Airey.

And to the medalists! In total Team GAW achieved a haul of 7 medals consisting of 4 golds, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals.

13yr old Ryan Zhao led the way; competing in only 5 events Ryan came away with 4 golds (50m/100m breaststroke, 100m backstroke, 200m freestyle) and a silver medal (50m freestyle.) A feat made all the more impressive by the fact that the last 3 gold medals were achieved in a 45 minute period with little or no time to adequately swim down and re-focus; a truly Herculean effort. The standout swim for Ryan had to be his 100m backstroke, a swim that left him top of the 13yrs British rankings for the event. After a bullet start Ryan used his trademark underwater prowess (utilising the full 15m permitted) to storm into an early lead. By 50m Ryan had around a 2 metre lead which was swiftly extended further following another lung busting 12m underwater off the halfway turn. Ryan proceeded to cruise to a 3 second victory over the field, even managing to completely miss his finish (just to prove he’s human!)

Team GAW’s other medallist of the weekend was 13yr old Adam Barrett. Adam joined his team-mate Ryan on the podium in the 200m freestyle, picking up an exceptional bronze medal in a gritty wall to wall performance. It was however his 400m IM that proved the greater achievement. As Adam surged into a half-way lead following a personal best 1st 100m butterfly and dynamic backstroke leg, he then managed to hang on grimly in the breaststroke before maintaining form in his frontcrawl leg. In securing the bronze medal in a time of 5:13.87, Adam actually lowered by a further 10 seconds his long course PB, achieved in his morning heat swim, a tremendous effort.

Competition resumes on Saturday and if this weekend is anything to go by, get set for another fantastic set of performances from Team GAW. Well done and good luck to everyone involved!

Paul

Gold for Will Hardy – World Para Swimming World Series 2017

For the first time in 2017, World Para Swimming (Formerly IPC) have introduced a World Series Competition

Bringing together some of the biggest competitions on the global calendar, the World Series will take in five countries across Europe and the Americas between March-July. Venues include Copenhagen, Sao Paulo, Sheffield, Indianapolis and Berlin

Here the world’s best athletes get the chance to compete before they head to Mexico City for the 2017 World Para Swimming Championships.

Competing at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge international pool Gateshead and Whickham Swim Team athlete, Will Hardy produced several outstanding performances during the four-day tournament.

19-year-old Will who has been out of action for 13 months following shoulder surgery has steadily been improving his performances

As this world class competition progressed he certainly proved he was back on the scene with personal best performances each day including a place in a final in his less favored shorter event 50m Butterfly

Competing as a S6 classification Hardy saved his best until the last day of competition

Swimming in the heats of the 400m freestyle the GAW Swim Team athlete took early control and dominated his S6 rivals Zach Shattuck USA and Matthew Harding GB. Applying even more sustained pressure throughout the race the produced a 7 secs life time best performance and a fast time of 5.53.73 earning a well-deserved place in the GB Final.

Ranked 9th going into the final Hardy with the most severe S6 classification of all the athletes was in no mood to be happy with just making the numbers up.

As expected the S8/S9/S10 athletes stormed off into the lead but with determination and effort of the tough North East athlete raised his game again producing an outstanding swim of 5.50.78, winning Gold and an S6 classification 400 freestyle top 4 World Ranking for 2017.

Northumberland & Durham SA Championships 2017 – Another successful N&Ds for GAW swimmers – well done team :)

Fantastic performances by all of our swimmers at February’s championships!

Below are the details of the 27 swimmers (2016 -29) who won a medal, made a final or finished in the top 10 of a heat declared winner event.

As with 2016 we had 5 County champions in at least one event – Ryan Zhao, Ella Watson, Sarah Wright, Jessica Cottee and Naomi Parker. Ryan’s haul of 9 golds being the obvious highlight.

The most pleasing statistic though is the total of the medals, finals reached and top 10 finishes. Our swimmers achieved one of these results 134 times this year compared to 112 in 2016. A significant improvement.

This doesn’t capture the huge number of PBs set and great swims by all our swimmers, including those who didn’t quite make it to a final.

Well done everyone!

Ryan was joined in his golden success by fellow twelve year age group swimmers, Ella Watson (50m butterfly) and Adam Barrett (400m freestyle). Two other Gateshead and Whickham swimmers, Jamie Young (12) and Jessica Cottee (11), won medals and five more finished in the top 10 of individual events.

The Club is also celebrating success in the Senior Championships with para athlete William Hardy winning three golds in the multi-disability classification in 50m and 100m breaststroke and 50m butterfly.

Head Coach Ken Nesworthy said “These young athletes show great dedication, training for many hours every week. It’s really pleasing to then see them perform at their best when it counts and achieve such a tremendous set of results against high quality opposition.”

Ryan and his fellow age group medallists will feature in Gateshead and Whickham’s thirty strong team of swimmers representing the North East this weekend in the national final of the Arena Junior Interleague.  This is the second year running the Club has qualified as one of the top eight teams in the country.

Club Chairman Andy Strickland commented “This fantastic medal haul by Ryan and his fellow team members, along with the repeated success in the national Interleague competition, shows how the hard work by coaches, parents and above all the swimmers, can pay off.”

ASANER (Age Group) Long Course Championships 2016 Review

As the November NER Short Course Championships are nearly upon us it occurred to me that a review of the Long Course Championships (Held in May) was well overdue.  May’s Age Group Championships witnessed a great many of our A and B Squad swimmers travel to Sheffield on consecutive weekends to race against the top swimmers in the region.

Every Team GAW swimmer swam out of their skins, recording numerous personal best performances.  In a very successful meet, the team recorded 29 final (top 10) positions.  Athletes achieving finals included Hannah Brown (12yrs 100m fly), Molly Finley (13yrs 100m fly), Zoe Price (14yrs 50m brs), Sarah Wright (14yrs 50m fly), Sarah March (14yrs 100m/200m brs), and Sam Pashley (14yrs 50m/400m fr).

Team GAW also made a significant impression on the overall medal table, placing a club record 6th place.  The team collected a stunning haul of 15 medals, of which there were 5 gold, 5 silver, and 5 bronze medals.

Special congratulations to Team GAW’s medal winners:

Adam Barrett:  Silver medals in 200m fr/400m fr and bronze medals in 200m fly/200m IM

Ella Watson:  Gold medal in 100m fly and bronze medals in 50m fly/50m bk

Ryan Zhao:  Gold medals in 50m fr/100m fr/50m bk/100m bk, Silver medals in 50m/100m/200m brs, and a bronze medal in 200m bk

And it all starts again in around 3 weeks time with the age group NER Short Course Championship with team GAW again sending a massive squad with over 120 qualifying times.

Good luck to all our swimmers!!
