UPDATED: Coronavirus Guidance

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Guidance

Further to the Prime Minister’s briefing this evening and Swim England’s announcement, I understand you will be concerned about the escalating situation with regards to the Covid-19 outbreak.  I would like to reiterate that the health, safety and wellbeing of our athletes and members remains our number one priority.

Details of the Swim England announcement can be found here which outlines a number of changes.  All competitions organised by the national governing body that are scheduled to be held between now and the end of May have been called off.

At present the Government has not closed schools or restricted school activity and therefore we do not see any reason why G&W ASC should not continue with our training programmes in our own environment within the  council guidelines of the facility until such time as either the advice changes or the facilities close.

At the point where training stops, it is the intention of the club to stop fees until training resumes.

We are following both Governmental and  Swim England advice and will keep you updated accordingly.

Emrys Pritchard

Chairman G&W ASC

PLEASE READ: N&D CHAMPIONSHIPS (PHOTOGRAPHY ISSUES): N&D County Championships 2020 – 1st & 2nd and 14th, 15th & 16th February 2020

Message from Dave Low (N&D Championships Manager)

Dear All

It has been brought to my attention that photographs from the first weekend have been posted by some Clubs on social media which clearly identify swimmers from other Clubs either on the blocks or preparing to race.  Some of these photographs show swimmers where their parents have not given photography consent and as such should not be published on social media.  This is a safeguarding issue.

In the circumstances could I please ask all Clubs to ensure that in future photographs of this nature (where other swimmers are included) are either not taken or that appropriate edits are applied to ensure the identity of other swimmers are hidden.

In addition could any Clubs which have published or shared photographs from the first weekend please review these urgently and remove any which show swimmers from other Clubs or where consent has not been obtained.

Thank you for co-operation in this important matter.

Kind regards

Dave Low

N&D Championships Manager

REPORT:Derwentside and Peterlee New Year Meet 2020

HNY!!!!!

First competition of the new year and also the last chance for attaining Northumberland and Durham County qualifying times.

On our return to the Louisa Centre after a year away, the swimmers were upbeat and the first few events showed that they had been working hard.  With many gaining personal best (PB) times it was in the girls 50 breaststroke when Jess Milburn swam her way to her first County qualifying time. Continuing throughout the morning the PB’s just kept on coming.  Moving into the afternoon session there were mixed results and in the 200 Breaststroke Jess again gained another qualifying time, making her my girl swimmer of the day.  Tom Goulden was my boy swimmer of the day, due to swimming 6 events and gaining 6 PB’s.

Sunday saw the majority of the swimmers gaining PB’s. With a notable swim by Hannah Paget swimming a great technical 100 Fly.  The girls 100 breaststroke brought big PB‘s improvements from Bea Wright, Holly Lawson-Ebbason and Maia Stovold.  Henry Stephenson was our only boy under 30 seconds in the 50 freestyle, others are hot on his heels.  Henry carried on with his success by gaining his county qualifying time in the 200 fly event at the start of the afternoon session. The session continued with the girls 50 backstroke and Rebbecca Allan managed to get exactly the same time as her PB!
Ethan Storey competed in the 100 backstroke and swam a amazing swim, which resulted in him making the County qualifying time.  The rest of the afternoon saw good swims from the boys Devrim Celikay (200BR), Elliott Bond, Lewis Richardson, Cole Reid (100FC).  The Girls in the 50 (Fly) – Robyn Clarke, Faye Brown, Kate Binningsley, Carman Gaish and with her last swim with our squad Elissa Smith.

So back to the pool and getting ready for the Counties.  Congratulations to all swimmers.

Coach Sue Thorpe.
